Open maps can be cached in the phone and LINZ mapping is stored locally, so both continue to work even without a mobile signal.
The app’s navigation features let you import or create a route to follow before you head out. It will give you alerts at waypoints along the way and even warning alarms if you veer too far off course. You can see your real-time location on the phone screen moving map at any time. If you are blazing your own trail, ViewRanger will let you record your track and all the stats you need like speed, distance and height gain/loss to keep or share.
